What’s in a name?

At the end of February 2016 Smart Accountancy Systems Limited will be 6 years old.  This is a massive achievement having started a business in arguably the biggest financial meltdown in history and not having a single client to our name.

Despite building a great team and client base during this time there has always been something niggling away in the back of my mind.  Our name and our brand – which explains constant changes and tweaks to the logo.  As we all know there is a lot more to creating something than a logo.

As the accountancy industry has moved on from the traditional Jenkins & Co to Smart Accountancy Systems we now feel its time for another shift.  Accountancy just does not fit anymore, nor does systems – they are now the same thing.  As technology takes over our lives the way in which we work and help clients is changing.  Our lives and work are becoming much more intertwined.

It is safe to say that over the last 6 years there have been times when we lost our identity, we lost focus, what we were trying to achieve was in my head and I was expecting everyone else to just ‘get it’.  This was wholly unfair and unrealistic. We needed help – we needed focus.

I needed someone to protect me from myself and that came in the form of Mark Adams.  We have spent in excess of 12 months looking at Smart, where we sit, what we are trying to do and how we do it.  We have been wide of the mark of what the company was set up to do.  We got too busy.  Well no more.  Over the past 18 months we have shed half of our client base and had a 100% turnover in staff.   We have a clear vision and values and we are living by them from here on in.  From today a new chapter is born. Something Mark and I can be proud of and that I can stop constantly tweaking!  Mark sadly passed away from cancer whilst working with us, he was 37 years old and a father. This was his last project so coming to the end of it has major significance for me.  Every tweak made to the website, every word rewritten feels like I am deleting a bit of Mark and it hurts.

The new website might not be perfect, it needs work but then again don’t we all.

So what’s in a name?  Nothing.  It’s just words, who you are, what you believe in and how you do it is far more important.
